George

Quick stop at the Costco last night. Wanted to run in a grab a few items. Showed my membership card to the greater (George) and didn’t make it much farther.

George is a retired corporate executive (CEO). He had taken up the job at Costco because he likes people. He has been there for years. He saw that I was wearing a shirt that said Centennial 40th Anniversary. He smiled and said…

“It’s my 50th next year for my school.”

“Where is that?” I asked.

“Burnaby North in BC. I am going to ride my bike there.”

“From London, Ontario to Burnaby BC?” I questioned.

“Yes sir. I want to go from Costco to Costco and speak to schools in-between. Tell them about being kind and caring for this planet. This country.” was his answer.

“That’s sounds great. But what is driving you?”

“Legacy. I am a bit of a loner. I need to leave a legacy. We all do.”

Thanks George, you proved my point of wisdom all around us. We just need to look. We also need to leave a legacy. I am trying to leave mine. It’s not easy. That’s why it’s a LEGACY and not just a WHIMSY.

Here is today’s question… Read it, write it, answer it and PLEASE don’t be afraid to share your answer here on the STUpendous BLOG!

What are you doing today to leave a legacy? What do you want your legacy to be? Look into a mirror and ask yourself if you are living the type of life that your legacy will encompass.

Getting you feet wet

It seems as if the world and so much of our lives are influenced by sports. Soccer is a huge source of national pride. In Canada we celebrate hockey and are so passionate about it, we debate in our federal government if our team captain is “Canadian” enough to wear the C on his jersey.

I am not a big fan of any one team so much that I am blind to others greatness. I do however enjoy baseball. I feel as if I can time my life around it. It is a sign of spring, when baseball starts the snow is almost gone. I like the idea of it being a true team sport. You need the whole team to win.

Last night the Toronto Blue Jays brought up Jesse Litsh a minor league pitcher to fill in for the injury riddled team. What happened? He performed beyond anyone’s expectations. Except one person… himself. He said that he wasn’t nervous because he had visualized this day happening since he was first drafted. He also said something that really struck me…

“You’ve got to get your feet wet. Once you get your feet wet you start to regain control of yourself and make things happen.”

How many people in life simply wait on doing anything? They hold themselves back from change because they can’t seem to take that first step. Usually, as soon as you begin that new habit or start that new routine or take that first jog it becomes easier. It’s making that first step. Getting your feet wet.

Jesse won his first game. In fact, he was only one out shy of a complete game. Good job Jess, you knew you could do it!

Here is today’s question… Read it, write it, answer and PLEASE share your thoughts here on the STUpendous BLOG!

Is there anything in your life that you should be getting your feet wet with? What are you waiting for? What can you do today to start dipping those toes in?

Today’s picture is of Jesse Litsh! Play ball!

Negative sign posts

Funny how we create almost permanent memories (sign posts) regarding negative situations and experiences. It can take you months to get over the loss of a relationship. Weeks to get over a defeat in a game. Days to recover from a fight with a friend. The positive vibes of a victory, a special day, acing an exam or even a successfully built new deck can last only a few days or hours.

Why? It seems so easy to hold on to the negative and so easy to let go of the positive. If we could hold on to the positive we could build on each success and create a life of boundless possibilities.

Had a group this past weekend at our camp. 18 students from an urban city school. Our staff tried to put on the best retreat possible. There were for sure some walls and road blocks set in front of them by the group. By the end the vast majority of the participants wrote great things on there reviews. A few (3) chose the cowardly super negative route and wrote negative comments. Which reviews do you think the staff had all read and discussed? The negative.

Look at this way… 83% of the participants at the retreat gave their experience an excellent or above average rating. If any politician, company or writer could garner such positive results their world would be incredible.

Here is today’s question… Read it, write it, answer it and OF COURSE share your thoughts here on the STUpendous BLOG!

Name 3 negative sign posts that you NEED to let go of. Name 3 positive sign posts that you need to embrace and cherish.

Success

How do you measure success? I measure in small victories. It’s hard to have to wait for giant events to measure success. Getting a promtion, making the team, honour roll at school, getting that special girl or boy in your life or having your first child. These events are no doubt very impressive and deserve great celebration. So does getting up an hour earlier, not eating three chocolate bars today, writing a note to a friend, completing that task for school or work a little early, telling someone you love them. These are great “mini-celebrations”. We need to have many mini’s before we can have a MASSIVE!

If you want to run a marathon you need to first run 100 metres. If you don’t SUCCEED at the small stuff, you will never succeed at the BIG stuff! So make some celebrations today!

Here is today’s question…. read it, write it, answer it and share your thoughts here on the STUpendous BLOG!

What are three success celebrations you will have today? Please share your thoughts (your three celebrations), everyone, here on the STUpendous BLOG!
