Building you.
I had a revelation yesterday. I was in Quebec speaking at a camp in Mont Tremblant. Great groups of students from ECS a private girls school. I worked with them for about 2 hours. We laughed together, we learned together and we grew together.
After about an hour and half I asked the girls to build a cake. Not a real cake but a cake about what makes their school special. There task was to draw a cake and include a representation of what makes their school different and special from other schools (other cakes… get it?).
Every cake has basic ingredients, every school has basic components, but something makes them different. You will probably buy the chocolate cake with cherries and sprinkles before you by a plain cake without any icing.
Think about you… every person is made up of the same basic ingredients… but some of us stand out and make an impact. Some us get noticed. Some us do great things. Some of us are doing more then others, not settling for the norm of the masses.
Today’s question…
What is that you can do to be more then just a basic human? What is that icing that you can put on you?
Write you answer in your journal and PLEASE don’t forget to post here!
Today’s pic is from yesterday… making the cake!

What is that you can do to be more than just a basic human being? What is that icing you can put on you?
-This statement is defined as a ‘basic’ human being.. First of all, to me, theres no way of being basic because wouldn’t that mean we all have to be the same?
For me to be more than basic, I can continuously volunteer without expecting anything in return. I can be couretous if somebody asks me a favour. I can stand out by constantly thinking of others instead of what my own self wants.
STU! I misssss you=)
me & olivia are talking to our viceprincipal soon about YLCC..

Our cake is famous! Famous, I say!
Thank you so much for coming, we really thought it’d be a lecture about leadership but it turned out to be so much more. You’re like a mix between Dane Cook & Richard Simmons (because I couldn’t think of anything else, uhh..) Really meant to be a compliment. It was so fun & you’re a very inspiring speaker. Thanks
what can I do to be more than a ‘basic’ person?
I will always push a little farther than I think I can. I will put in that extra effort to make that extra difference. I will not be afraid to offer myself, in any way, shape or form, to help make something else that is ‘basic’ a little more exceptional….there are many layers to a cake, and I am willing to pass up the spotlight, and be a lower layer, supporting the top.
with this mentality, I feel that being ‘basic’ doesn’t matter, because a bunch of ‘basic’ components can combine through teamwork to make something truly brilliant occur.

Alright so basically of every speaker we have ever had, you were by far the best. A lot of the point you made really helped me put things into perspective. And to answer your question i don’t think it’s possible to be just a basic person. Really when you think about it, no matter how hard you try to fit in a be like everyone else, you just can’t be. Is there really a basic person? Or do we all like to think that we’re all basic people?
What I do, to be more than a basic human being, is to always try and improve myself. I see so many folks just going going going, living by other peoples’ wants and needs and never doing anything for themselves. I know that it sounds a little selfish, but I believe that leadership, life, etc has to begin with you. In leadership, you must lead yourself first, before you are able to lead others. In life, you must live first as well. So, I always make certain to live, do things to better myself, find ways to make life meaningful to me, and by doing so, I know that I am becomming a better person, leader, friend, to others.
Stu, love the question. I think it’s important to recognize our basic human qualities. Here, I’m talking about those things WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON. In this world right now we must see that we are all HUMAN BEINGS. It seems there are to many divisions.
These divisions and what people attach to those divided lines create wars an chaos. Strip away your faith, your age, your colour of skin and what you have is a HUMAN BEING.
I agree we must grow beyond the basics, but YOU MUST recognize those basic human qualities in yourself and KNOW THAT WE ALL SHARE THEM. Use these commonalities to step toswards the differences in the people you see around you.
peace. of mind.

Hi Stu,
I just wanted to say that I thought this was an absolutely superb exercise! I’m still thinking about it and how it relates in my own life.
Thanks for getting me thinking!
Keep on the sunny side!
